It's Value Branch: UK
How long have you been with It's Value? Since May 2023
What is your background? Software development / engineering / architecture. Also a lot of work specialising in Asset and Configuration Management and IT Service Management. Designed, developed and sold (as "two blokes in a shed") some enterprise software to manage IT dev/test environments and configuration to Virgin Mobile, Nationwide bank, Sainsbury's. Never had a significant, major or severe incident. Apptio's product quality makes me wince; it's embarrassing. If two blokes in a shed can design and develop well designed, documented, reliable and robust enterprise software then Apptio has no excuse.
I've lost count of the number of programming languages I've used over the years, from IBM mainframes to single chip micro-controllers.I can generally make things work.
What is your specialty area within the IT/Finance/TVM domain? I don't have one (yet)
What's one thing you've done / built so far in your time at It's Value that you're most proud of? Nothing significant yet but I have plans! I actually want to improve and standardise the Apptio implementations (including documentation) so people can transfer between clients / projects and easily understand the landscape and add value without needing extensive archaeology
I did also write some software that can call the Apptio servers and extract the meta-data (so for example get all the config for all of the tables) into a spreadsheet. This little personal project required a lot of research (web call tracing, and working out what minimised and obfuscated javascript was doing) and developing software to call Apptio pretending to be the browser to allow automating hundreds of individual calls to get the information. Apptio should provide an API to do this anyway, but don't. It requires a bit more work so that it will work automatically with each new release of Apptio.
Are there any hobbies that you enjoy? Playing music (I play guitar and bass reasonably well, keyboards/piano to some degree and used to play drums but hand/arm issue stops me now).
Flying microlights (this is my current steed: https://abpic.co.uk/pictures/registration/G-UMMS and this was my previous one https://abpic.co.uk/pictures/registration/G-CDWO). I competed for the British team in international flying competitions in 2002/2003 (GB took Gold, came 9th in the world in the 2-seat flexwing class)
Do you have a favourite musician, author or artist? Or maybe you have a favourite podcast? If you can, tell us your favourite piece by them or an episode you particularly enjoyed! Favourite band is probably Queen. Favourite musician Brian May (who I've been keen to meet but it's never happened. Daughter #2's boyfriend has met him several times through family friends, annoyingly)
At the moment I'm pretty obsessed with The Last Dinner Party. They are the most exciting band since Queen and the front woman Abigail is an incredible performer, the likes of which I've not seen since Freddie.
My favourite podcast is probably The Rest Is Politics. I abhor most politicians but Rory Stewart is a clever, decent and thoughtful person who could do great things for society given the opportunity.
Where is your next holiday destination? Or, tell us about your favourite place away from home to visit... Indonesia and the Maldives. I love Indonesia (especially Gili Air off the northwest coast of Lombok) and been there many time. Next January my girlfriend wants to go to the Maldives as it's a "big birthday". It really doesn't appeal to me but managed to find some friends to tag along and combine it with a trip to Indonesia first. An acceptable compromise!
Do you have a favourite quote from someone you admire, that inspires you in some way? Whenever I find myself prone to gossiping I remind myself of this Eleanor Roosevelt quote "Great minds discuss ideas; average minds discuss events; small minds discuss people"
Please use this space for anything else you'd like to share with us! I have two daughters (22 and 25) who are both working in Audit for large accountancies to gain ACA qualification. Girlfriend's brother is a partner with PwC in Denver. It may be his remuneration that inspired their career choice!
I'm curious. Sometimes this comes across as being nosey! I'm interested in many, many different things and find myself reasonably competent at most things technical.
I loathe apathy. The reason you get bad service is because the previous person put up with it. And if you put up with it then the next person will get bad service. I call this the circle of apathy. Which is one of the reasons I've raised over 70 bug reports with Apptio in the last year :o)
I find myself "destination focused". I fixate on the destination and don't enjoy the journey. I'm trying to change this. It's a problem because life's ultimate destination is...
